I love talking about books and when I can’t get someone to stand still long enough for me to discuss the latest vampire novel with them, I can always turn to the Internet and find relief. The first online book community I found was LibraryThing. I immediately joined and started inputting my book titles and joining groups. Next, I fell in love with Shelfari and finally, I found Goodreads. As I found one site, I slowly but surely stopped updating the others. Eventually, I only kept my Goodreads shelf up-to-date. Until today that is…The Story Siren mentioned yesterday that she was thinking of joining LibraryThing and I asked her if she was already a member of Goodreads and she said yes. She also has a Shelfari. When I asked her if she was planning to keep them all updated she simply answered, “Why not?” Well, I have to say that I felt a little ashamed. So, today I exported my list of books from Goodreads and imported them into LibraryThing and Shelfari. None of them have the same number of books listed, but who cares. I’m just going to call it good and from now on, add new books to all three sites. Here are the book counts for each site:
LibraryThing – 885

Shelfari – 859

Goodreads – 691

I started with Goodreads and moved to Shelfari, which I found easier to use. And I must admit I never went back to update my Goodreads shelf. Now you’ve made me think I should! I really like the Shelfari community and enjoy the group discussion there. I don’t link it to my blog, however, because Shelfari is now owned by Amazon and I’m a strong believer in independents (and work for one)
I guess the only thing about Shelfari that turns me off is that it is so graphic heavy. My Internet connection isn’t always the best and with all those pictures it takes longer to load than the others.
I actually belong to all 3 as well. I post reviews on all three but prefer the groups on Good Reads and Shelfari. I keep track of my wish list books only on Good Reads and Amazon though.
